So recently I've had a few phone calls informing me that I'm going to be cut off, or I owe some money .... or some other scam .... but in order to proceed, I have to press "1" on my phone to be connected to someone, otherwise the call just gets disconnected.
Now I love having these scammers on, so I'd really like to proceed with the call ..... so my question is, if I press "1", is there any chance I'm going to get connected to a premium rate number; or does it not work like that?? I'm itching to proceed with the call, but I'm wary of ending up with a huge bill for the phone call. Common sense says that I should only be connected to a premium rate number, if I knowingly make the call myself .... but sometimes common sense doesn't prevail :)
I’m like you sometimes, Giz, depending on my mood, and like to string them along.
However, I would never, ever, press any key to continue a call, not worth the risk.
If you press 1 you may well be connected and subscribed to a premium rate number. You also confirm that your telephone number is valid and might be used by a "mug" for further exploitation.
You can also almost guarantee your number will be sold on and you can then expect continuous further scam calls.
I'd just delete it although I can understand how you feel
Don't press the '1' all this does is harvest your phone number to sell on to other scammers. Honestly, if you want these calls to stop then put the phone down without even speaking, as even a human voice on your end will trigger the fact its a 'real' number. When I had a land line telephone connected (which I no longer have) I wouldn't even say 'hello' until I heard the caller was not an automatic voice. Having a 'play' with these scam call operators is futile, you don't wind them up they couldn't care a less. If you are that bored then try a new hobby...:-)
No way should you press 1, if, on the rare occasion I get one of these calls, I never speak and their end goes dead, remember it’s not just you they’re calling, they hit a key and maybe a hundred numbers are called, they’ll know they’ll get lucky with some gullible people who will press 1
