I'm thinking some offcuts of wood 450-600mm long (depending on your requirement) 50mm wide by 25mm thick. Drill a hole either end and then bend some offcuts of blue plastic water pipe (known as alkathene) and place in the holes. You may be able to find alkathene in a builders' skip if you're lucky.
