Can you remember a Wimbledon with as many upsets as this one? Now Kvitova is out. Even an ailing Kvitova who takes the first set against the Belgian, Flipkens, would be odds-on to win. Still, the bookies are happy.

As the Radio 4 commentator illustrated it, there are 16 players in the singles quarter finals but with only two grand slam titles between all of them. I wonder what odds Ladbroke's would have given against that happening?

I quoted that the way that it was stated on Radio 4 but, on reflection, I think that she must have meant 'Only two players who've ever won a grand slam'.

perhaps not entirely the same, but the men's singles competition of 1973 contained many unfamiliar names following the boycott by the ATP - a competition in which Bjorn Borg reached the quarter-finals at his first attempt.....

It has certainly been chock-full of upsets. And it's therefore to Murray's and Djokovic's credit that they have both come through the carnage unscathed -- they've both yet to drop a set!

The men's quarter-final line-ups look fairly interesting with Djok v Berdych and Ferrer v. DelPo in particular likely to be good matches. It's been a bumper year anyway.

I think the man on radio 4 is as clued up on tennis as you are, Beunchico. Of the last 16, Li Na, Kvitova and del Potro are also grand slam winners.
