Football Hype?

How many people are really interested in watching the world cup? A nearby village (in France)put on an event last night with live music, pizza wagon, bar etc. Oh and around the corner outside the bar a large screen showing France v whatever. I was surprised that only about 20% of the people were watching the match, 20% listening to the music,the rest were standing around talking, eating and drinking. Would it be the same in the UK?

I'm really interested in watching the World Cup but I wouldn't want to mix it with pizza and live music myself. Prefer it neat.
