Just watched this old Match of the Day clip from early 1960s. Just a minute in there looks to me to be a real bad challenge from a Chelsea full back which led to Jonny Giles being stretcherd off. It looked like a deliberate recklass challange to me yet the commentator said it looked innocent enough. Anyone else agree that would be a straight red and possibly longer ban today

How often do you see a player stretchered off today? In the 1960s/70s it was quite a regular occurrence.

If you thought that was a bit "rough" you would have been agog at some of the challenges made by Eddie Clamp. Maddest man ever seen on a football pitch but he could play and the fans at all his clubs loved him. He was Stan's minder at Stoke and Ron Harris had poleaxed poor old Stan. Eddie chased Harris and threatened to break his neck or worse. The Ref pulled Eddie and was admonishing him when Eddie said " that's the trouble with you refs, you don't care which side wins". Priceless.

Thanks all. Yes a remember Chopper Harris and Norman bit yer legs Hunter, Tommy Smith and even Nobby Stiles.Dont remember Eddie Clamp tho. It was well known defenders were instructed to make a couple of early hacks at opponents to leave there mark, sometimes off the ball. A remenber as a youngster skinning a defender and then a minute later he said something like "you wont dare try that again " and then floored me with an off the ball punch in the face.
Still, that McReady challange looked inexcusible (delibrate and leg breakingly dangerous) to me even for then and am suprised that Kenneth Wolstenhome thought it was an innocent one.
A prefer the modern game but maybe its gone a little to far the other way, the smallest challenge like shirt pull or what we called a fair shoulder charge will get a booking. A played in my 40s in a match and was booked for obstruction just for nipping in front of a younger player and winning the ball when he was receiving it from a throw in.

Eddie Clamp played over 200 games for Wolves in the late 50s, so he must have had a bit of football in him, though he did have a certain "take no prisoners" reputation.

Haha Bob Ta. In that same match Clamp did indeed wipe out Harris a few minutes later. Harris never went near him or Stan again all game. Another I remember was when Eddie was trying to take a throw in and Dennis Law was continuously jumping up to obstruct him. Eddie threw the ball full force into Law's face as he jumped up(big hooter and all). Law balled a fist as if to hit Clamp(who could have killed him) and Clamp went down like a sack of spuds without a punch being thrown. The ref sent Law off, who wandered away bewildered with blood running out of his nose. Clamp had a grin from ear to ear and was giving the Boothen end the thumbs up as they taunted Law.

Played for England as well Doc in the World Cup I think 1958. He was what would be called a holding midfielder these days, and could play. Because he was such a ferocious tackler most managers sent him out on a search and destroy mission. He didn't mind that. He frightened the life out of Billy Wright.

Yes, today he would have rightly walked for that challenge. That said the came has gone totally the opposite way, footballers must practice how to fall over at the merest touch now. It needs nipping in the bud because it is ruining the game and commentators do not help calling it clever or saying 'he had to go down or the referee wouldn't give it'

Yep, reckless and very late. Definitely a red today. Fair play to Wolstenholme, though, he did say he was "following the ball" rather than the tackle and he didn't have the advantage today's commentators have with instant, slow-mo replays from a zillion angles. The other thing to note is the reaction of the Leeds players. None of them are waving imaginary cards in the referee's face. Perhaps they all thought that 'Bites Yer Legs' would exact retribution later in the match.
