I got up and went for anearly run so that I'd be back for the last day of the Olympics.

And whats's on ... ?

A really dull football match. The first truly dreary, dull Final of the whole Olympics.

Come on, get it over with. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Football just shouldn't be an Olympic event. I might go for another run.

Morning jayne - we posted at the same time. Lovely day for a run anyway. I will say (in a very small voice) that I don't like wathching sport on TV so haven't been following the Olympics - only the highlights in the evening

hi JJ--will word this as best i can-----the marathon,e.g.-i know it is 26 miles 300 odd yards--how do they determine the distance of the course to be run-i mean do they measure it on the inside of any on-course bends-this would be the shortest route round-or do they measure it the distance along the centre line of the route
ok the 100 mtres e.g . is easy to determine

Beejay, it's a good question. ANd the honest answer is, I don't know.

The distance is 26 miles 385 yards. Apparently they measure it on a bike, with a measuring device called a Jones Counter.

Did you notice the peculiar little hairpin that the runners had to run at the end of this Olympics? The organisers wanted the race to start in Tiananmen square (the tanks had to move aside for the day!!) and finish at the Olympic stadium, but the course didn't fit, so when the runners got to the stadium, they had to run about 50m past it, turn around a hairpin, and then come back again.

It's a good job it wasn't like a school cross country ... all the runners would have just hopped over the barrier and gone straight into the stadium.

re the chinese change of course--i think the truth is that the organisers heard there might be a northern ireland competitor and they were worried the tanks might get hi-jacked !!!

also JJ-surely the 'world marathon record time' is also a hazy area--due to difference in course layouts and underfoot conditions-isnt part (albeit small) of the london marathon ran over a cobbled area

You're definitely right about the variables, beejay. The Beijing course was always known to be a "fast" course.

Just like the pool in Beijing was known to be a "fast" pool (they have a very advanced temperature control system to keep the water at optimum temperature, and extra width at the side of the lanes so that the swimmers are not affected by their own backwash ... so it's "fast water").
