England WC Consolation: Howard Webb Gets Final.

Howard Webb's been named as referee for Sunday's WC final. Can this small accolade in any way make up for England's abysmal performances in South Africa?
I realise that it doesn't change results, but will the country feel at least a smidgen of smugness that an English ref and linesmen have been appointed to the most prestigious game in world football?

The Dutch might be pleased because in the 1974 final another English referee, Jack Taylor, gave them a penalty inside the first couple of minutes.

In this age of cynicism, when referees maybew more than anybody get nothing but flak, I would like to say this is a fantastic achievement for Howard Webb. I hope he has a great final and that this nation - and indeed the World - will appreciate him.

I still think he is the worst Referee in Football,in a previous post last season, lots of "proper" supporters agreed with me.

No offence to Howard, I wish him all the best, but just think of Lineker, Hansen, Chiles and Motson talking about the World Cup Final without mentioning Holland or Spain. They will cling to this like drowning men rould a lifebelt. I can see the pre-match profile, his life story, what he was doing in 1966 when England won the World Cup, how he would have dealt with Maradonna's 'hand of God' and how he would never mistakenly disallow a goal when the ball had crossed the line. I'm off to top myself now so I don't have to suffer their sycophantic ramblings on Sunday!
