Wireless Connection

On my new laptop I use a dongle to connect to the internet and this works fine.

However, I understand that if I am away from home and near a 'hotspot' where I can access free connection such as railway stations etc, that I can then dispense with my dongle? I don't know how to do this!

In the tray at the bottom of my desktop there is a little 'greyed out' icon which when I hover over it indicates 'wireless'. I can't get anything by left clicking it. Is this something to do with access to free connections without use of my dongle and how do I set this up?

Make sure that the wireless card is turned on, most laptops have either a little switch somewhere on them or it's a combination of 2 keys that are press to turn on the card. Once it's on then you just double click that icon and it will list the networks available, simply double click on the one you want to join and enter the code provided by the owner of the network (if required)

Unfortunately there is no instruction book with my Advent Modena and there is no switch for wireless in the laptop (there was one on my previous laptop)
If I go into fn and then all keys fromf1 to f12, none of these works for this.

FN + F4 to turn the wireless on and off. There's normally an indicator light to tell you if it's on or not.

Oh and look in start > all programs > advent and you might find the manual.

Have found it on F4 - I was pressing CTR instead of fn!!
Yes, it comes flashes up in corner of my desktop with message 'wireless on' but does not alter the 'greyed out' icon in the tray, so still don't know how to access wireless without my dongle.

Re. the manual - when I go into PC World help page (I purchased the laptop in Jan) all it says is 'electronic manual coming shortly' and the store told me there is no manual hard copy and that they don't know when electonic manual will be available!

They have given me a print out of the keyboard now at least. Thanks for your help.

Hi chuck...
Still can't find how to actually show the connections available despite having wireless switched on. Your 5 April says wireless card needs to be switched and then I click and it will show available connections - but 'wireless icon' is still greyed out!
