RAM
6 Answers
I've started to use my old desktop again. It is running Windows Vista and at teh moment has 1gb RAM. It is a 3.2 gHz machine, so I don't think it is over the hill just yet.
I decided to to give it some more RAM to make it a bit better, so I took out one of the 512 'sticks' and pit a 1gb in its place. I went to the shop with the 512 and asked if a 1gb would be compatible. The man was fairly certain it would.
Now it wont switch on. It gets stuck Verifying dmi pool data or sumething.
Do the sticks need to be the same, or is my computer too old to accept updated RAM?

So if that doesnt work, what do you think are the chances two 1 gb sticks will work? They cost like €20 each, so I don't want to risk buying another if there is not much possibility of it working
Thanks ChuckF for your invaluable advice

My RAM was setup in two 512 sticks, I bought two 1gb sticks and when I booted it up, it would just beep at me constantly.
What I did to get it working, as I have four slots for RAM, in pairs of two, I put 512 in the first slot, then 1gb in the second then I did the same in the other two slots, the push down tabs to pop-up the ram where different colours, black and white.
On the first set, it was like this :-
[black tabs] [512]
[white tabs] [1gb]
2nd RAM slots :-
[black tabs] [512]
[white tabs] [1gb]
You could try setting it up like that, but without the 2nd 1gb stick. Either way i got it work after trying loads of different ways :)
