Which brand to avoid?

I'm looking to buy a new computer very soon, either a laptop or a desktop for anything up to £500. For any particular price bracket there are various models available which each have their pros and cons.

But are there any brands which should be avoided - because they are of poor quality or tend to break down or lack of support or for any other reason?

Stick with the better known brands and you won't go far wrong.

HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony are all generally OK.

We've just bought a Dell, and so far it is brilliant.

We've had two HPs, about five years for the two of them, and had no trouble. But I don't suppose you can really tell anything from one user's experience.

I figured that most people are going to be happy with their current computer and are likely to recommend that make, whichever it might be. So that is why I was wondering about the bad brands, the ones that people are happy to get rid of, and if more than person had had problems with the same make then it would suggest avoiding that particular one.

I have found my Asus excellent - it is a bit tougher having been designed for engineers' use in the field - more solid state and less moving parts. Big keys as well.....

I had an Acer for five years and was very happy with it but have recently bought a Dell, which I am very pleased with at the moment. My brother in law works with computers and when I asked his advice he told me to avoid HP.
