Right-click on Computer and choose manage
On the right, under Storage, click Disk Management
Right-click the second partition of the external drive and delete it
Right-click the first partition and choose Extend volume
Set it to the same size as the disk
Why does it need to be D and E?

Note if you already have a hard drive and a CD/DVD drive they will probably already be using C and D (D will probably be your DVD drive).
It wasn't clear to me from the OP whether the disk was presently divided into two partitions when one was required, or vice versa. (Or for that matter whether there was existing data files that needed to be retained.

But I suspect it was the former and it was required that it was empty, and so Chuck's suggestion should be fine.

However if it is 2 partitions you require as VHG suggests then Computer Management/Disk Management allows you to change the allocated drive letters anyway.
I don't see any suggestions from chuck?
That's because he impersonated rojosh. Gotta watch out for that.
