Believe it or not, inkjet printers have a giant sanitary towel in the bottom which soaks up all the spilled ink (from alignment checks, head cleaning and printing). The most common cause of the "Service required" message is that the printer has decided that the absorbent is full. It may be possible to cancel the message and continue to use the printer. But then you risk flooding your desk with ink.

I've done nothing about it yet, but it looks like it is repairable. It's resetting the counter that's the problem.

Many of the Epson printers ink cartridges have a sensor that allow the printer and the associated software know when to replace the printer ink cartridges (even when the cartridges have ink within them) and when the printer needs to be cleaned. In some cases you can bypass this message by following either of the below steps.
Use printer buttons to reset
Use the printer buttons to reset the printer by pressing and holding the "Stop", "Maintenance", and "Power" buttons all at the same time.
Other Epson models such as the RX620 require you press and hold the "Stop", "B&W", and "Power" buttons all at the same time.
Use third-party SSC service utility
In addition to the above recommendation users can install SSC Service Utility, a third-party utility that allows you to adjust and customize many of the settings including the sensor that generates this message.
