Help ..... screen not working on laptop

HP Pavillion laptop, it powers up but the the screen remains blank.

I have tried conecting the laptop to a desktop screen, even though the screen recognises that the laptop is connected the screen remains blank.

any ideas .... - sorry using a german keyboard and do not know where the question mark is.

Do you see anything when its first turned on? (the HP logo)

and What's the exact model?

A lot of laptops (including HPs) of a certain age had a known design fault with the graphics chips that caused them to fail.

I have had it about 4 years Chuck , it lights up but nothing shows on the screen.

OK, that has an ATI graphics card, so it's not the known problem as that affected Nvidia cards only.

You could try going into the BIOS by tapping either F1 or F10 as soon as you turn it on using both the internal screen and an external monitor to see if anything comes up, if it doesn't then it may be a fairly serious problem....

Also try shining a torch at the laptop screen when it's on and look carefully to see if you can see a faint image, if so it may be the back light gone on the screen.

BTW, the question mark is at the top next to 0

that is what i get when i press the key with the question mark ........ tried it ...nothing .... insert miserable face

In that case you've probably got a German keyboard but are using an English key map, so the ? will be next to the right hand shift key and would be labelled as - and _ (press shift and the key for the question mark)
