movie maker problem - why are my movies squashed up?

I'm not sure if this is a camera setting or something in windows movie maker, but suddenly when I publish my movies, they are squashed up to the wrong format, even though they never look like that either in the camera or in the WMM program when I am putting the film together, and they never used to be like that in the past.
I make short family films incorporating both still and video, the stills are fine, but the movies are squashed vertically.
I have trolled through every setting I can find on the camera (Canon sureshot G9) and tried tweaking the 16:9/4:3 ratio settings in WMM, but they still come out too square and not 'letterbox' enough.
Something I'm missing somewhere?

Can you check the last stage of WMM program - the 'publish' stage - here you will find options for finished movie size and format. Sounds as if something at that stage might give you the result you need.

I've tried publishing in both 4:3 and 16:9 format but nothing changes. I have also used a different camera to eliminate the possibility that it might be some setting on the camera I have overlooked. Movies still squashed, stills OK though.
