A friend of mine was recently widowed and the laptop he has is in his wife's name. His Norton runs out in a few days and he has forgotten his password and her account has been closed. How does he get round this?

He could get rid of Norton and use a free anti virus such as Microsoft Security Essentials, or he could subscribe to Norton in his own name and do a clean install of the program.
As has been suggested, get rid of Norton. It can't be uninstalled directly from the Windows Control Panel. Your friend will need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool:
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Then install MSE:

Thankyou both. I shall pass on your information.
Whatever your friend does he does not need to pay for Antivirus, I use Avast its free and updates everytime I switch on, have never had an issue with it in 5 years.
