Has Google Chrome Lost Its Shine

Yesterday I up-dated my Google Chrome and it resulted in a lot of Malware being downloaded along with the Browser.

I have always regarded Chrome as being a top-rate, back-up, to my favourite Firefox. However, I have now uninstalled the Google item and doubt that I shall ever do a re-installation or recommend the Browser to ABers.

It was Not straightforward to remove the Malware, which included the dreaded 'Conduit' along with others such as 'Bubbles Dock' 'Next Live' and 'Search Project'.

Anyway, I now have my Computer back in a good healthy state by having uninstalled Chrome, along with all that came along with it. It did involve entering the Control Panel to manually remove all items with the same date and then doing a scan with the free edition of Malwarebytes to discover and remove 20 Pups (Potentially Unwanted Programmes).

not necessarily, Methyl. I got stuck with Conduit while updating iTunes - a totally legit update but with all sorts of rubbish attached.

Hi Methyl......I always make sure that I am using genuinely official sites.

Jno... Hopefully you have got shot of Conduit. If Not, please post again.

Hi again methyl....I acknowledge what you are saying but I am careful with all downloads. However, I have got 'shot' of Conduit and lots of other unwelcomed items. Anyway, I didn't think that you approved of Google, so what does it matter.

Hans.
Hi Has,

Did you download a new version which you double-clicked to install?

Or did it update in the background, as Chrome does now?

I think Methyl may be correct, and you got caught out.

I once had Conduit in my PC..wa hell to get rid of..don`t even know how I did it.I once had all those shopping compare pop ups too...drove me crazy...thankfully seem to have gone now...but would like to know how I got them in the first place!!!!
I've tried Chrome twice... Once when it started woo-hoo. later again still bilge IMO.. guess I'm old school and stick with firefox.
I once had Firefox...didn`t like it at all but that was quite a few years back, maybe it has improved since then

@methyl...I remain positive that I Did Not have 'Conduit' prior to downloading 'Chrome'. However, there were 'Conduit' items amongst the litter of PUPS that Malwarebytes found and duly quarantined for my removal of them.

methyl....In truth, I find it difficult to disagree with you. The point I am making is that Chrome is Not a sparkling example of a perfect Browser.

Perhaps I can be so bold as to ask ...."What is your favourite Browser"?. Mine is Firefox . Is yours perhaps Internet Explorer. ?

It's lost its shine for me because I can't stand the new Google homepage. When it first changed a while back someone on here showed me how to revert to the previous style but that option has now been removed in the last 2 or 3 weeks. The problem (for me) with IE is AB froze constantly.
Hans, wished I'd logged on to your letter earlier. Your letter has preceded mine regarding Google Chrome! Sounds like bad news all round!

Do you get the feeling that Google want to have complete control of you???
Question Author
@methyl.... Cheers... I like to think that we agree on most Technical matters and I would wish other ABers to know that you are a real Techie, whereas I still have a lot to learn.

The final paragraph of your last posting is true and should be noted by all readers of this thread.

I used to get cheesed off at Chrome when I used to find it installed unbidden after installing something else. It may be the greatest thing since unsliced bread for all I know but it ceased to be a favourite with me before it started, after those episodes.
