(a) your computer hasn't got a suitable program (e.g. someone has emailed you an Excel spreadsheet and you've not got Excel, or a compatible program, on your computer) ; or
(b) your computer has lost the 'file association' which tells it which program to use to open the files.
So what's the file extension (e.g. .doc, .docx, .xls, .ppt or .jpg) on the end of the file names of the troublesome attachments?

Perhaps your AV software is doing you a favour and preventing your opening the attachments which might contain viruses. (or should that read...Viri )
Tell us, are the actual e/mails from trustworthy sources.? It might also help if, as indicated by SlackAlice and Old_Geezer, we knew what E/mail programme you are using.

Please be careful about opening email attachments even if the source is from someone you know. The senders computer might have been compromised by a virus. Scan attachments with an anti-virus program before opening if you really want to see what it is. To be honest, unless it's a picture file (jpg, gif etc yes I know even these can be unsafe) I'd contact the sender and would not bother opening. Also be wary of clicking on links in emails as well.
