I reckon Cameron is hoping the Argies try to invade. How that will strengthen his vote to stay in Europe.!! If we needed a aircraft carrier to supply vital C.A.P. for the rest of the amphibious assault group whilst out of Typhoon range of the Falklands he can go cap in hand to the French and ask if we can borrow theirs providing we return it in good condition. He can...
TTT....not sure why you think it makes me happy.....a lot of Welshmen died, as well as others, to ensure that the Falklands remain safe, but are the Islands safe now ?
As a Tory supporter, can I presume that it doesn't make you happy either ?
It does not mikey, it makes me very unhappy but you and your ilk hate money being spent on the military and this is an inevitable consequence. Governments of all colours cut military spending and I think that is foolish. When we spend billions on foreigners, the EU and our own WSS, our forces have barely got a catapult between them. The military budget needs at least doubling and we should cancel trident, keep polaris goring and spend the money on conventional forces especially ships. At the moment we have more admirals than ships, and the "ships" are more like *** lifeboat dingys as it is. So that is why I say it makes the left and GABF very happy as would losing the Falklands especially if it happened on a Tory watch.
mikey I think you mean "without" naval protection.
This is so, but the Falklands are arguably better protected with an RAF base sustained be Typhoons ( I think).
Sqad...it is but as usual, this thread is being taken over by other interests.
A couple of days ago, a thread about religious bigotry in America, which could have been very interesting, was taken over by a daft and pointless discussion about transgender people, and their toilet arrangements !
Nice to see you showing concerns for our Falkland Islands Mikey, but then it is not really that is it, it's just another excuse for you to carry out more of your Tory bashing isn't it?
/// "The biggest threat at the moment isn't Argentina, it's Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party who want to override the wishes of the islanders." ///
If, in four years' time, Corbyn is a) still leader of Labour and b) somehow, magically, able to convince people that he's worth voting for, then yes he'll be a huge threat to the Falklands. As it is, that is still over four years away, leaving the main threat to the islands as Argentina. As long as the Islanders want to remain British (which they overwhelmingly do) then we should stay in a position to defend them.
He can then boast how secure we are by remaining in the EU.
I believe it was pointed out to the coalition that it was almost a crime to retire Sea Harriers and their platforms whilst the new carriers were on the slips. At the time the coalition hadn't decided what aircraft was to be used on our new carriers.!! Cameron never,it seems,is prepared to listen and learn from his military General Staff.
