As I read that, you're not actually watching a 'downloaded' movie (that exists as a file on your iPad) but a 'streamed' one, which requires an internet connection to view it.

Some streaming services (such as BBC iPlayer) offer a facility to actually download a file, for viewing later, rather than simply streaming it. However most (including, say, Netflix) don't and you MUST be online in order to watch the video content.

So which service are you using to access your movies?

Ive paid for and downloaded a movie from iTunes so no - I'm not streaming it.
A bit of googling suggests that you're probably trying to play the video within iTunes, when what you actually need to do is to use your iPad's video-player app or (possibly better) one of the alternatives listed here:

All sorted now. Deleted a few game apps and film now downloaded and all ready to watch on the plane!! Thanks all
