I think I need to give up on web searches coming up with anything even remotely connected with what I ask in the box.

My woman is concerned that she has been warned that she has used over 3 Gb of data today and near her limit when she has done next to nothing on the PC.

I wanted to give instructions on looking at the list of updates that may have been automatically downloaded, but I don't know where to find that list in Windows 10. Anyone know where it is ?

Or indeed anyone know why a Internet account would suddenly jump up to a ridiculous amount show in a morning ?

TIA

We thought of neighbours, but the router password is not the default and she'd not give it out; although she did worry about folk hacking her mobile as that connects to the router, but I thought that very unlikely.

I used the Windows 10 uninstall screen to uninstall. It ought to have been ok.

Aye hc we tried that, thanks, but at the time there were no updates shown for quite some days.

Since my update there seems to be differences to my PC, I now no longer have to go into advanced options to get to the update history. The new update history is not so useful as it has simply links and a reference to the last update. Click on the only one listed and it opens a browser page to "this page doesn't exist". Uninstall does give a list of updates but grouped strangely and no size column.

It all seems deliberately designed to avoid folk finding anything they want (rather like the help pages on websites that will do anything other than give a contact number).
I have installed the 3GB update today and I really cannot see a difference in the OS. The update history log is in the same place and exactly the same as it was earlier.

Can you give me a step-by-step account of how to do that, please?
You say her account - but are you using the same account? Eg. you get your internet from eg. BT, you both have your own computer with your own names, but both of you are using the same internet account.

Do you have anything else connected to the internet? Sky etc?

Let us know which router you have as you can access logs within the router.

Numerous differences, some I've found already are.

Magnifying glass icon for search / cortana is now a circle an it has a horrible "friendly" load of options instead of just search.
Settings was near the top of the start menu before, now I have to go down to the S section.
Update history was in 'advanced' options but is now at the update level above where the advance link is.
I'm sure there are more to find/recall.

She does have a download waiting to install and has now agreed to kick it off now. I'm 99% sure it must be the cause of the hassle but it set her panicking as we've had enough bad luck incidents at present and the apparent loss of a third of the allowance, on a morning when she'd done next to nothing raised visions of massive bills for no benefit and not being able to afford to connect to the Net, being chased for £thousands etc. etc. etc.

Things seem a little calmer now thanks, but I still am unaware where it tells me the size of the download. All I find on mine is a reference to an update to version 1607 and a link to a non-existent webpage.

BTW she did have the switch on so that MS can use her PC as a server. I'm unsure how much that added, but "bloody cheek" seems an appropriate response. Must be the default. Perhaps MS will be sending her a cheque in the post for the data allowance use and inconvenience.

No we have different accounts. At present she is about 130 miles from me and I'm trying to help over the phone.
Your right about that being the default setting - I found it reading one of the earlier links in this thread! Cheeky so and so's!

If she goes into the admin section of her router she can see exactly what has access to her router - let us know which router so that we can give instructions as to where and what to look for.

I think it's a Netgear but I'll ask what model when the update has finished in about 90 minutes or so.
Here's a start - part of this shows how to find attached devices on netgear

Have you hear of Team Viewer - if you install it on both computers, you can control her computer from yours - so you could check her computer from yours rather than try to do everything over the phone.

She will be given a usernumver and pin that you enter on your computer to gain access to hers.
// she did worry about folk hacking her mobile as that connects the router. //

Probably something working in the background on the mobile and nowt to do with Windows. Turn the phone off and see if the data stops being eaten.
Question Author
I installed team viewer on both PCs: it has been useful when I need to see a PC problem she has, or when I've forgotten to bring some data with me when with her. But it does use up data allowance so using it is rare.

But when the fear is that the data is being eaten up no one wants to leave the router on !
Might be worth using it for now to see the logs of her router incase you find the answer that way

An N600.

Look at page 98 - there's a bit there about entering your monthly limit into the router.

Thanks. I'll try to sort something out over the weekend.

Since the issue is clearly Microsoft's lack of concern over burning through folk's data plans (because users aren't important) I think I need to define what time of day an automatic download is permitted.

Trouble is that so far I find that the only suggestion to stop MS taking over control of one's personal computer as if they owned it, and had any right to do so, is to define the Internet connection as metered.

Problem is (and I shall carry on searching after posting this) the instructions I find on the Net to accomplish this, are flawed. They say to first so to Start / Settings / Network & Internet / Wi-Fi / your connection name: but as anyone who follows that will be able to see, there is no Start / Settings / Network & Internet / Wi-Fi.

On the Network & Internet screen all we see are Status, Ethernet, Dial-up, VPN, Data usage, and Proxy down the left hand side. There are links in the right had pane but none look likely to be the one.

I'm finding loads of screens and changeable things but nothing I feel confident is going to achieve what I wish, and not going to cause an issue when I'm not around to try to fix it.

Anyone any thoughts on how to make the normal Ethernet connection to the ISP a metered one ? If I can't get that far I can't even start on working out how to say "early hours of the morning only".

Cheers.
