I have a Brother printer (DCP-J4110DW), it is a couple of years old and has worked okay until now. I put it on to allow me to scan something and it went 'bang' and died. I don't think that there is any hope for a recovery and I now need a new printer.

Can someone help me to find one that suits my needs?

• I need an all in one printer
• A printer that is easy to use
• It would be nice if ink replacements were cheap
• Brother prints A3, it would be nice to still be able to do this

Printer questions come up here all the time and, without a shadow of a doubt, the most frequently recommended brand is Canon. Some of their printers are sold incredibly cheaply (I've seen them as low as £19.99) but they're the ones which use a single cartridge for coloured inks. It's generally better to look for a model which uses separate cartridges, as they can work out a lot cheaper in the long run.

Any of those printers would meet your basic requirements but none of them can handle A3. For that you'd need the iX6850:

I had a look at the printers and the iP7250 seems like a good option. I got the A3 printer because I wanted it and not because I needed it. Will the ink replacements for the printer be not too expensive to buy, I usually get the brand named inks but only because the quality is usually better and more reliable.

I am annoyed that the stupid machine packed in tonight as I wanted to scan postcards for our charity shop - so we can sell them online. (I have two that have 'posted on board the Titanic' on the back of them, franked in Oban and Gateshead - a mystery yet to be solved, when I have the patience).

I will order the printer after Miss Marple solves her latest crime - currently being shown on my other laptop.

I can guarantee that you'd find 'compatible' inks from Inkredible every bit as good as Canon 'originals'. I've been using them for years, including for printing my own greetings cards. Several recipients of them have asked me how I get such incredibly good quality prints, so the inks are obviously good!

I use an Epson and not that expensive...scanner/fax/copier and printer all in one and I paid about forty quid from my Asus agent...works well, though one has to watch Microsoft updates for sending things awry.

Thanks to all of you. Printers seem to be relatively cheap these days but I have recently purchased a new set of ink and they cost me about £40.

It is the scanner function that I need just now, serves me right for not scanning them this morning.

I don't know what I would do without AB, :-)

Chris - I was unable to purchase my printer from any outlet as they were out of stock.

I gave up and got the MG5750 which is still showing as £49.99, I paid extra for delivery as I need it asap and I will be getting it tomorrow afternoon.

What ink will I need? I will use either your ink people or the one that choux uses.

The MG5750 is a cracking good printer. (It's the updated version of the MG5350 which I use myself).

A full set of all 5 compatible inks costs just under 20 quid from Inkredible (or a bit less if you buy in bulk), which is about a third of the price of 'originals' (and they're just as good).

If you order from Inkredible you'll occasionally get emails about their special offers. They're well worth checking out, as they can get you your inks at even lower prices. (i.e. watch out for the special offers and then stock up for the future). You also earn a small amount of 'loyalty credit' with each order, which you can cash in at any time against a further order.

To get the best from any printer you need to use decent paper with it. I use HP Bright White Inkjet Paper for documents. (It's 90 gsm, so it's a bit more 'business-looking' than ordinary 80 gsm stock). I've occasionally seen it offered cheaply in The Works, otherwise it can usually be found in Sainsbury's.

For 'ordinary' photos (such as when I'm producing greetings cards) I use HP Everyday Photo Paper but for 'special' photos (such as ones which are going to be framed and hung on the wall) I use Kodak Ultra Premium.

When I print photos on A4 size printing paper, it always jams in the back of the printer, but I have no trouble with 4 X 6. any ideas?

I have no trouble printing on ordinary A4 printing paper.

AOG:
Some printers don't like certain coatings used on photo papers and struggle to feed the paper through properly. Simply using a different brand of paper might be all that's needed.
