I've just bought a WD 4TB Ultra external drive and want to configure it as :- 2TB for Photographs - 1TB for Video and the rest for Documents,Music,etc.. I think this is referred to as 'Partitioning'?
I don't think I have the ability to follow detailed instructions and wonder if there is a free( I shall only use it once!)program, that is safe, reliable and is empathetic to "dummies"?
Help,most appreciated-especially without crticism!
Thanks

But why do you want to partition it, just create folders called Videos etc. and let the system deal with the rest. Having different virtual disks (which is what partitioning does) would just complicate matters surely. With 4TB you're unlikely to run out of space unless you are storing a lot of HD video and if that is the case then your allocation of less space for...

Partitioning is creating multiple drives from a single disk. It can be done using disk manager (or is it drive manager ?) in Windows. Since this is a new disk, you can use it to learn and gain experience. If you get something wrong you can just start again. Give it a try.
PS try not to accidentally change your existing drives ;-)

Thanks OG - it's your second comment that worries me!
Just don't click on the existing drives and then you can't change them. Or if you click on them, click on the new one to leave the existing alone. As I recall, you do need to confirm each step anyway.
These might help. Windows has its own partitioning tools

Thanks SlackAlice.
You obviously missed the critical word in my original post - "Dummies" , cos the guy was talking Klingon about shrinking a drives capacity to replace with another??? not what I'm looking for,but thanks anyway.

I must admit that Fitzer has confirmed what I suspect I wanted to do initially and just let the system do the work and as OG said earlier,'it's a new disk,if you get it wrong just start again'. So,after all that I shall simply create some folders and learn?
Thanks all & stay safe.
