I'm having problems trying to print any document. Firstly my printer has disappeared from the "printer & faxes" menu in my control panel. It is now only showing "add printer". When I click on "add printer" I get a message saying "operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running". Ok..I go into the print spooler service and press "start" then a message displays "error 1068: the dependancy service or group failed to start".
Could someone please give me any advice as it is a pain in the @rse!
Thanks.

Ah well, simple things first (assuming you are XP):

  1. When you go into Services to start the spooler service, make sure the Startup Type is Automatic, if not right click on Print Spooler and select properties, change the type to Automatic, OK your way out, reboot and try to print. No printer will work if the service is not automatic and started - printers may not even be recognised.

  2. If unsuccessful then go back into Services and make sure Remote Procedure Call is Automatic and Started, if not, right click on RPC and into properties and change the type to Automatic, Ok your way out, reboot and try again. The Print Spooler service is one of many that require RPC to be running.

  3. If that does not work, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324757 may help - be warned it involves editing the Registry, if you get it wrong you can totally screw up your system. If you do not feel confident about, or do not understand the instructions, find someone who does.

Hi Geoff,
Yes I am using XP - PRO EDITION
I had a feeling that it would involve modifying the registry.
