Hiya folks,

I recently purchased a wireless ADSL Modem with built in Router and a matching card for my laptop.

After setting up all the configurations, I managed to get the router running perfectly on the desktop. Ive installed the adapters etc on my laptop and it appears to be running and talking to the router.

The only problem is, I cant access the internet on my laptop. Ive had a browse around the settings but im stumped! I try clicking in Internet Explorer icon and it just comes up with the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message.

Please help!

First check that you are receiving an IP address from the router - start run cmd (for XP) and type ipconfig /all, look for the entry for your wireless adapter, it should have and address similar to 192.168.0.2/3.

If that is ok, open Internet Explorer and click on tools, internet options, connections, lan settings and tick the box that says automatically detect settings.

Shut down and restart Internet Explorer

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 3:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix .... :
Description .... : 802.11g Wireless Cardbus Adapter #2
Physical Address ...... : 00-12-BF-55-53-AB
Dhcp Enabled ........... : No
IP Address ............... : 192.168.2.3
Subnet Mask ............ : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway ........ : 192.168.2.1
So your router is giving out correct addresses. Have you put any encryption on the wireless signal? (WEP for example). If you have then you need to enter your encryption key into your laptop. Also make sure your wireless adapter on the laptop supports the level of encryption you have set 64, 128 bit etc...
testing...

Nope, still cant get it working. Bloody technology!
Turn off the router for 5minutes as well as the laptop. Then turn them both on and try again.

Already tried that one im afraid. It was turned off all night and I turned it back on this morning.

The router and the adapter seem to be communicating but I cant get an internet connection at all on my laptop.

The ip address for my router is 192.168.2.1 and the ip address for my laptop is 192.168.2.3.

Whats all this business about gateway's and dhcp etc?

Your wireless card doesn't appear to have a valid DNS entry. Is your router using DHCP? (This means it automatically gives out IP addresses to pc's that connect). If so it needs to also give out DNS server addresses. Goto the control panel and double click Network Connections (In Classic View if XP). Right click your wireless connection and choose properties. Left click on TCP/IP properties and then click properties. Choose to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and input 192.168.2.1 then click ok to everything. This will manually set your DNS setting. This may work if your router supports it, but you may need to know the IP address of your ISP's DNS servers and input them instead. Let me know your ISP and I will try and find them for you.

Sounding good Kerplunk..

Ive got BT Broadband.

Just to clarify, am I entering this info on my laptop?

Yes follow my instructions on your laptop from where it says "Goto control panel...".

Although ideally your router should be set to automatically give out these settings.

P.S I think Bt's dns servers are:

217.32.105.90
217.32.105.91

Just as a test type the following link on your laptop:

http://66.102.11.99/

does it connect to google?
