Can anyone recommend a 35mm film negative scanner to transfer my hoards of family photo's from negative to digital ? Also is transfering negative to digital that much better than prints to digital ?

Yes, if you use a GOOD negative scanner then the quality is better than scanning the prints because there is one less quality-sapping stage in the process. Probably the two best film scanners are the Nikon Coolscan and the H P Photosmart. Canon probably do a good one too but I've never used it. You can pick-up a good one on e-bay for little money, use it for all your negs, and then sell it on e-bay again when you have done. Total net cost should be very little.
