Hey i have just moved house and got the 3 for 30pounds broadband, cable tv and phoneline. We have the internet connected up to the downstairs computer but are looking to connect it up to the 2 upstairs computers too using the same broadband. We have bought a wireless modem router but the problem is we have a friend who is good with computers trying to sort it out but he says the only way it can be done is by having the broadband connection coming off the main downstairs computer meaning we have to have that one on all the time for us to use the upstairs computer. Does anyone know any other ways we can get around this ? or has anyone else had the same problem? I mean where iused to live we didnt have to have 1 computer on all the time so i dont really understand it? any advice would be great
You don't need to have a computer on all the time.
You plug the broadband modem/router into the phone line. Then you connect each computer to this, either with a cable or wirelessly. To do it wirelessly, each computer needs to have a little wireless dongle, which plugs into the USB port of the computer. New laptops often have wireless built in.
Therefore, if you're doing it with cables, you need to plug the wireless router into the phone socket nearest the computers.
I used to have the same type of setup, the router was plugged into the telephone socket and all PCs came off of the router, shouldn't need to have one PC on for the others to connect.
Hey cheers for your answers. Our problem is our modem isnt a phone line it is just a telewest box and the cable that comes out of the phone line isnt a normal internet/phone type plug on it its a round pin plug (similar to that on a mouse where u plug it into the back of your computer). IS there any way there is maybe a converter that plugs into the round pin hole socket in the broadband box on the wall- but on the other end is a socket which you can plug an internet/phone style plug into? cheers
