Far less hassle to buy a cheap dvd recorder for your tv and record to that.

If you buy one with a hard drive, you can edit the recording - cut out commercials and so on.

i have a dvd recorder linked to tv but because of other units connected to it and the problem of having no further room to site the vcr and some recordings are copy protected,i would like to record via the computer as you can dvd to dvd.
i realise that it may be a hassle but it can be done i just need to know how
But this is an excellent 'how to' article if you determined to do it via your pc:

If your videos are copy protected, it is simply a matter of putting tape over the hole.
