I have bought a laptop for the family at Xmas and a Norton Int Security disc, but have yet to set it up.
I remember you usually get a three month free trial of Norton on these computers.
Is there a good reason to use the disc immediately, as I was thinking of letting the free trial run and only putting the disc in when it is about to expire?

Unless you plan to continue with Norton (at a fee) I would not even start using it.

There are loads of examples on answerbank of free versions of all that Norton does.

Free does not mean bad as most of the companies sell their products to companies but make them free for home users.

AVG Anti Virus does a great free anti virus

Zone Alarm does a great free firewall.

Adaware is free and searches your PC for spyware.

WinPatrol is free and monitors your PC to make sure nobody is changing the settings or installing software without your knowledge.

There are others like Spybot Search and Destroy etc, but the 4 above are the ones I use and never had a problem.
