In my opinion free utilities are as good as anything - provided you use them properly.

I use ZoneAlarm firewall
AVG antivirus
Ewido (now AVG spyware)

And a few others I will mention if you are interested.
Bullguard came free with a laptop we bought for our sons xmas prezzie. Well when I say free it only give us a couple of days and then asked us to buy the full version. Don`t think i`ll be taking that option because like Ethels already mention a few good ones. I use AVG and Zone Alarm on my pc and are please with their level of secruity
Comodo firewall will marginally out perform Zonealarm and is free

Bitdefender 10 for virus, rootkit and spyware protection can be bought for very close to 13 if you download it from Herman St website. Bitdefender is also highly rated.
