A friend had to reformat and now upoin trying to reinstall service pack 2 it gives an error saying that the setup cannot continue because the file ftp.exe is already in use. can someone please elaborate on this?

ftp.exe is the program that you use to upload and downlad files to and from the internet. It stands for File Transfer Program.

Is he trying to upload or download something from the internet while trying to reinstall sp2 ?

No, Its a clean install and nothing should be running. I installed ghostwall and avast but completely disabled them both and still have the problem.

Have you tried installing while in Safe Mode?
