O E has recently started asking if I want to compress my messages to free up disk space. I don't keep a lot of old messages, I delete most of them apart from a few humorous Emails. - I said Yes to the request a couple of times and now can't find a particular Email which I needed to refer to. How do I switch of this nuisance of a request? Please. - Thanks and Regards

Compressing e-mails in OE will NOT delete them or move them anywhere. If they have been deleted then they will either be in your Deleted mail box. If you have emptied this then they have gone.
