Automatic updates!

Hi! Since my computer downloaded the most recent automatic updates (there were 14 of them) my computer stopped connecting to the internet even tho it showed there was an active line (I switched the broadband box off at the wall and the comp recognised that the broadband wasn't on) I have had to do a system restore back to last Friday in order to connect to the internet and I have switched off automatic updates to tell me when there are new updates but for me to do it manually and even now I can see the little yellow shield in the bottom right hand corner begging for me to click on it!!! Can anyone please tell me what I can do?!

happens alot with me, i jst unplug the foneline at the back of the modem and restart. normal works after a couple of goes. faulty wires?
