Optical mouse problem

I have had my optical mouse for 2 weeks and for some reason it keeps on jamming on screen and the pointer doesnt move. I had it connected to the mouse port but have now took that part off and just put it into a USB port, any idea why it comes with both a mouse port attachment and a usb connection. Thanks
