connecting a dell laptop to a television

I have all connected all the wires but all i see on the tv screen is the wallpaper. No icons or mouse. Someone told me that if i close the laptop screen it world work but everytime i close the screen it goes into standby mode. Someone please help me.

Found this reply on another forum, no idea if it will work though.

If u have S-Video (which u supose to have) then plug it in to your laptop and TV.

Then go display properties->settings->advanced->displays. There u'll see three things: PC, laptop and TV, turn on the button on tv and apply it.

This is basicly it, unless u want to make some changes in properties, like make an extension for ur monitor.
