CD movie to DVD

I've been given a CD containing five movies. Each one has a title like "Norbit[2007]DvDrip[Eng]-aXXo" or "Small Soldiers(Xvid)(Darkside_RG)" when I right-click on the icons in "My Computer" and select "properties".

At the moment, I can play each of the movies on my PC using Yahoo Player as the default viewer. The stand-alone DVD players I have will not play the disc.

I'd like to find a way to burn some of the movies onto a normal DVD-R and I obviously need to change the file extension to something compatible with my DVD players.

Can you suggest how I go about doing this step-by-step please as I'm not familiar with the procedure. I assume there's free software out there that will do the job. I've currently got Nero and DVD Shrink installed on the PC.

I should add that when I viewed one of the movies, Yahoo Player showed the movie title with the extension ".avi" after it. I'm not sure how this fits in with the extensions shown on the movie icons as none of them have ".avi" as an extension.

Oops, I've just noticed that the movies are on a 4.7 Gb DVD-R and not a CD as I thought (the last disc I was given was a CD but I could do nothing with that)

They don't have extensions because Windows is set not to show the extensions of known file types. This can be changed in tools -> folder view (or something like that), when you're looking at the files.

Anyway, you want to convert the files from .avi or similar to DVD. This will take some time, and there are lots of different pieces of software available.

Do you have the latest Nero with the video converter software? If not, this is free and pretty good:

Use one of those tools to individually convert the files from .avi to DVD format (copy them to your hard drive first), and then convert to a single DVD if this is what you want. Or assemble the avi's individually and then group convert to one DVD.

I'm not sure what the best apps for doing this on Windows are anymore, sadly, It's been a while since I did it on that platform.
