I am running windows XP and when I try using the DVD drive my computer "hangs" (freezes) and will not respond to ANY key press, so I have to manualy reboot using the reset button. I have replaced the DVD ROM and the cable. I have also tried a CD rom in place of the DVD but with the same results. This happens as soon as the DVD drawer closes and the disc starts to run, it also makes no difference what the disc contains (data, film etc) Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
desktop or laptop ... what processor .... has it ever worked.... can you think what happened that made it stop (new prog, device etc)
do you by any chance have a bootable CD?
or better yet .... a win98 bootdisc http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
(hiren, ubcd knoppix?) - does that work?
can you see the CD/DVD drive in your bios screen?
a quickie
open device manager - any yellow triangles or red circles?
removing the device in D manager
reboot
It is a desk top with an Intel pentium 4 processor. It has always had this problem but to start with it happened very infrequenly so when ever it was returned under warrenty nothing was found because the fault didn't happen, but now it occurs 99% of the time.
