sometime ago i had to reinstall windows xp as i had forgotten my password since the new installaton i cannot get sound from all my speakers on my 5.1 output the original xp is still on the system can anyone help please

try this
Click START.....CONTROL PANEL....Audio and Sound devices and check nothing is set to Muted
or
Click START... then ALL Programs then ACCESSORIES...then ENTERTAINMENT.and then
..VOLUME CONTROL and check if anything muted and sliders are where they should be.
