I downloaded Avira but after doing so several other antivirus downloads appeared , so I downloaded one and after that I returned to AB. There is no icon on the `All Programs` to confirm them.

(I assume you uninstalled AVG before installing Avira?)
disconnect from the internet
double click the file - and answer yes to everything

once installed Avira would download and update it's databse.
it should just do it's stuff
(I would expect an icon in the system tray ... and one in all progs)

what's not happening?
