How Strange ??????

Just had a call from the Police. Interpol have been in touch with them about a Sony Visy (sorry didnt pick it up right) laptop which has been recovered nr Strasburg and when they checked the serial number it came with my husbands name BUT not this address -the address was where a lot of businesses are in a nearby city-the businesses have no knowledge of anyone there with that name. Its an unusual name and there arent any others with that name that they can find. I'm concerned that perhaps its some kind of fraud -although the Police Officer said that had it been this address they would have thought that also. I dont even think for a millisecond that he did indeed have a lappy -what do you make of it -fraud ,co-incedence and is it easy to trace a person through the serial number? As you can imagine just a tad perplexed !!

my first thought is it's a scam of some sort, interpol probably wouldn't really care one bit about a single stolen laptop, it's kinda a bit below the level of stuff they deal with.

Did they ask you to supply any personal details at all, if so hope you didn't. Or did they by any chance say anything like they are happy to return the laptop for a small payment to cover shipping

Why not pop into your local police station and ask them, at least that way you will know you are really talking to the police and not just a voice on the phone that says they are the police and if they know nothing about it at least you have allerted them to the scam,

Thanks for that -and thats what they did say -Sony VAIO.
However she gave me her shoulder number and the department she was in and she didnt ask for any details at all.Main HQ number and her direct line.
I am really a bit worried - its just so strange as i know there arent any others with his name and in particular the spelling of his christian name -thats what has puzzled them as well.
Feel as though its a big conspiracy going on-I even asked if they had 'accessed' the lappy but no they havent -its still in Strasburg.
O I am all worried now.

Sorry drissy but am confuzed. But I did think that every serial number can be traced and dosent every genuine copy of windows has a serial no which you have to registrar.

But Im not shaw as in harry.

serial numbers on computers can only be traced if you actualy register them and most people never get round to sending those registration cards off, same with windows, can only be traced if you actually register it with microsoft and this is an optional step during the install, you have to validate the number when you install but this process doesn't incude any personal information.

I also work for interpol ... send me �10000.00 to cover postage and processing and I'll make sure that the laptop is shipped to you ... no one else has claimed it after all!!

.have you got caller ID ... or any proof the call was genuine ?
if not ... and you are feeling public spirited ... ring the police ... if not - just ignore

accessing a laptop (to anyone with the correct tools) is a frighteningly easy task .... do you imagine interpol wouldn't have those tools?

erm .... well we need to get the laptop posted over from Strassburg .... hermann has put a bid on e-bay for some password tools that might work .... we'll have them in a week or so if we are lucky .....so ....

what's really amazing is that you would think that this is anything but a scam ....
If interpol was really involved ... special branch would have given you an early morning visit.
