leaving computer on standby

been having trouble switching my computer back on and wondered how safe,i.e no fire risk,it is to leave on standby even overnight.any suggestions most welome.

What's the problem with switching off?
hibernate lets you switch off the machine ... so it sounds like software?
that said ... rojash is right ... my old (and now pretty bu**ered) number two machine stayed on for 18 months ... then I got the green bug ... (and a ridiculous lekky bill) and started switching off ... within 3 weeks I staered with hardware problems.
having said that ... the house is still standing
