My PC has recently been in dock for an upgrade and re-installation, partly because it had become very slow. I'm a bit disappointed that it now makes an irritating humming noise. Sometimes It's not too bad and I manage to ignore it, but at other times it gets louder and can be quite maddening. I'm told it might over-heat if I cover it. Please does anyone else have this problem and found a way of dealing with it?

Sounds like it's the cooling fan. Take it back to whoever serviced it.
headphones playing Alvin Stardust's greatest hits is a good way of not hearing the humming!

Think I'd much rather listen to the humming noise.

It is almost certainly a cooling fan, if it's CPU fan shouldn't be more than about 15-20 to get it changed, if it is PSU fan probably about 30-40

Thank you all for your comments and interest. I did wonder if it was a fan but don't know anything about the works inside a computer. I've been in touch with the person who serviced it and he has promised to call and sort it out for me.
