audio tape to cd transfer

hi there i have some old audio tapes which are destorted and would like to get them onto my pc and improve the quality then burn to cd i havent a cue how to get them onto the pc and do the rest could someone give me a step by step instructions how to do this start to finish regards stu hopefully brave gordy he helped with some of it regards

your computer will almost certainly have a line input for audio on it, if it's a desktop it will probably be round the back next to where the speakers plug in if its a laptop then you can use the mic port as a line in, all you then need to do is use a lead such as below to connect the line output on your cassette deck or stereo to the line input on the pc.

Then you will need a bit of software to record and edit the music, I use audacity as it's pretty good and free.

And you'll need time and a bit of patience :)
firstly, you can't improve the quality - you can't add, you can just take away. if the original is rough then you can not turn it into hi-fi with software. however you can limit the tape hiss, RF whines or similar interference.

secondly, you need a cassette deck with a line out socket to connect to the PC. ask on your local freecycle or go to places like cash converters. maplin do cables, as chuck said.
