I can get the screensaver to cut in after a pre-set time (i.e. 5 mins) but no matter what length of time I set to shut monitor down it will not work...Also the closing of the lid does nothing either...Any help please?..Telboy

On my laptop, if I go into the Windows Control Panel there is an icon for Power Options (it may be in Performance and Maintenance").

Open up Power Options and there are a number of tabs and you can set all sorts of options in there.

One of the options is what to do when you close the lid of your laptop (on the Advanced tab) - nothing, hibernate or stand by

Hi vehelpfulguy....you are normally correct but, although my laptop is new and also not cheap, the facilities you mention are just not there. For lid closing all I have is "Do Nothing" and an option to turn off automically or manually in the Power button window. Think I will ditch SP3 and see if it reverts to what it used to be...What say you?
