Off on hols in 3 weeks to Canada, and am taking the wife's laptop with us. A couple of the accommodations we have booked state they have "wireless internet facilities" - this might seem stupid to some, but will I need a password or similar to acces the web while I'm there ? We are both "silver surfers" now and although info "goes in", it doesn't always stay there !! Any help would be greatly appreciated.. FBG40
Usually what happens is that you will get a "password" from reception to enable you to access the internet but to be honest, why bother? If I was going to a wonderful place like Canada, the last thing on my mind would be surfing the net.
Hi
Thanks for your answer. The reason for the Laptop is to make a log of the holiday (something I have always done but writing up a log every day is a pain), keeping the photos that I intend to take and transfer onto dongles, and finally to let my family know that we arrived safely and keep them updated from time to time. I won't be spending time "surfing". A bit of an anorak you might think, but hey, that's me.

Don't forget that the OEM copy of Vista that your new laptop will come with is legally downgradeable to XP. However, beware that unless the Laptop comes with an XP downgrade CD (which many do) that some of the components for the laptop will have been designed purely for Vista and there may be no XP drivers.
if you found a log a pain .... starting up and sitting down with a lappy will do your brain.
a notebook fits in your pocket, and you can jot a few lines sitting in the car/train/plane/cafe/restraunt etc.
.... oh and no one will try to steal it either.
if that's your reason ... I'd say don't .... if you want e-mail ... get a smartphone or pda
