I was googling something a couple of minutes ago when internet explorer annonunced it had stopped working and when I exited ,the laptop started making a noise which I can only describe as a small alrm clock going off. It has stopped now since I came back online - has anyone any idea what caused this?

If the noise was 'siren-like' it's the CPU overheat warning. It could be a sign that the fan has packed up, or that the laptop isn't getting the required ventilation. (That's particularly common when users expect the machine to work where its name implies it should, i.e. on your laptop. That's because placing it on your knees can block the ventilation holes underneath it).

When a CPU starts to overheat, software doesn't respond properly and often (as in the case of your Internet Explorer) shuts down.

I appreciate your answer Chris but my laptop never sits on my lap - in fact I use it on my computer desk and the noise wasn't particularly siren type either just intermittent beeps so I'm doubtful it's overheating but thank you anyway - it was good of you to take the trouble.
's probably either over heating or the HDD is failing ...
sirens and alarms don't just go bebabeba
there is also wooo wooo wooo and rrrrrrriiiiinnnnngggg

also you don't just get fluff from your lap

switch off - stick the vac nozzle ofer the vent(s) at the back and give it a good sucking

and try to be a bit less patronising ....
