DVd's wo'nt play back on television

I recently purchased a device to transfer video tape to DVD disc on my laptop. I have successfully transferred video tape to mylaptop and then burned to Dvd disc.The problem is the discs will not play back on television I get a message on screen saying it is the wrong type of disc. Any suggestions please
PS the discs will play back ok on the laptop.

You need to look at your dvd player manual and see what sort of disks it does play.

It may only play R-, for example, or R+; it may not recognise RW or RAM. If it is an old dvd player it may not play copied disks at all.

Or possibly, you're just burnig the AVI files the device has created from the VHS tapes.
Not sure if it has done this.
Check you're burning DVD video files to the disc though (.VOB), or you'll need to use Nero or something to convert them

thank you both for your input, I have carried outsome tests
and taken professional advice and it would appear that
I need additional software to finalise the discs . this is
now in hand and I am hopeful of the results.
