You don't need to set up a network and the change of browser won't help this problem.
Try a simple thing that will take no more than 5 minutes.
Turn everything off at the plug. Router, modem pcs and laptop. Wait at least 2 minutes and turn back on in this EXACT order:
Modem ...wait 30 seconds
Router (if separate) ..wait 30 secs
Pcs and laptops
That is often enough to get the connection up and running again, and you're not fiddling with the setttings

GRRRRR
Turn the firewall on your laptop off few a minute or two. If it now connects, turn the firewall back on.
If it doesn't connect, turn the firewall on anyway as we know that isn't the problem.
Have you got your connection icon in the bottom right by the clock?
If so, right click on that, and click 'repair'

forget the wireless .... and dancing naked round the bin at midnight ..... and don't buy any beans!
lets keep it real
look at the obvious -
is the bl@@dy wireless adapter switched on?
It doesn't matter if it was an accident - if it's off - its off
(actually it doesn't sound like it is)
swap the cable from the desktop to the laptop ..... does that work?
has the aerial dropped off?
if you are still no closer - get your fix from the desktop .... get a good night's kip ... and resign yourself to the fact that tomorrow we are going to go where no spotit3 has been
