Software programme

I am trying to use a microsoft software programme I legitimately purchased and used in 1996 which loads OK but then informs that it can find no 'database'. This is because my present computer has a different number to that required when registered on first loading. Also, it needs a password which I cannot remember anyway.

The software does however operate OK on my husband's xp desktop and my xp laptop and I was previously able to use it on a 95 & ME. It has obviously left a tag on my present computer NOT to accept it.
Microsoft no longer supports this programme.
Any ideas please?

You dont tell us what Operating System you are trying to install it on, only that it works ok on your husbands XP and your laptop XP.

If you are trying to install it on Vista then that may be the problem.

Vista is very different "under the covers" from previous versions of Windows and my gues is that Vista is the problem.

If Microsoft no longer support it they are not likely to supply a patch.

You could search on the interent for the product name and Vista to see if anyone has a patch or bypass.

Well VHG & Rojash, I thought I did mentioned present computer is XP. Sorry about that. I purchased this computer just before the event of Vista, so I was able to puy Vista at the cheap price of �30 but have not had the nerve to change over because I'm pretty sure Vista will not be as good as XP and MS programmes seem to have less and less content. I now use Word 2000 which is really superior to the current version and I also use my old version of "Microsoft Picture it"! The later version does not have "clone" on it and the programme has far less content.

Having said that, I was rather reluctant to mention the programme as it is "Greetings Workshop", the very first version produced in 1995 in conjuction with Hallmark.
I thought you might think this rather sad !!!
Thought I'd make some Christmas Cards as I've just bought yet another new printer and I would like to give it a trial. I have other print programmes, but this one is so good!

Have been to the depths of my computer to find the actual file preventing the opening of this programme. Many thanks in advance if you can come up with something - I hate being beaten! Trish.

I think you are misinterpreting the message.

Try this:
Right-click the icon that you use to run the program
Choose properties from the menu
Click on the compatibility tab
Check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
Select Windows 95

Click OK

Now try running it.
