When I choose START then SEARCH on my laptop, a blank window opens with the puppy in bottom left corner.
Can anyone help a novice restore this please?

a propper search window!!!!
that stupid stupid dog!!
I used it for two seconds ... then just had to remove it
the easiest way is
start | run | REGEDIT
regedit opens
Hkey_Current_user | software | microsoft | windows | currentVwesion | explorer | cabinatState
Capitalise EXactlY AS it's shown here
right click in the right hand box
new | stringValue
rename the New Value #1 to Use Search Asst
double click Use Search Asst
a new diaog appears - in value data
enter
no
OK
close regedit ... and it's done
alternatively copy the following text (only the text - not the _______)
into a text document
rename the text file to dog.reg
double click dog.reg ... accept ... and it's done
