Restore that doesn't Restore

Over the last couple of years I have tried on several occasions to rectify a problem by going back to when it was working properly by using the restore feature on Vista but it has never been successful despite choosing various dates. It always fails with the message sayinng the attempt had been unsuccessful.
I have had to solve the problem by other means or put up with it. Is this a Vista problem ?
